An interesting article appeared last week in Holyrood, Scotland’s current affairs magazine which highlighted that there will be a consultation, beginning on 18th March, to canvas opinions regarding converting Notre Dame High School in Glasgow to co-ed.

It’s currently girls only, as it has been since opening in 1897, although back then it had only 24 pupils on its roll.

Previously an independent school, it subsequently converted to state maintained status, but kept the girls-only admission criteria.

Notre Dame High School is one of the top performing high schools in Glasgow and has previously been subject to previous campaigns to change it from a single-sex school.

A previous campaign in the 1990’s failed and a fresh campaign, led by the campaign group NDH4ALL was commenced during 2017.

That campaign gained support and resulted in the city council agreeing to the consultation, scheduled for early in 2019.

I understand that, because of the girls-only selection criteria, around seventy percent eighty percent* of the children attending the school live in locations outside the school’s own catchment area.

It’s interesting to see that there is such strong demand in the area for access to this particular school and hopefully whatever decision is made ensures the same quality of results continue to be achieved.

Following public meetings scheduled over the next few months the deadline for submitting responses is 26 May.
