English Language & Literature Tuition
KS2, KS3 & KS4 including GCSE
Achieving a good GCSE pass in English is a ‘must have’ exam in order to be considered for many jobs and careers.
Research has shown it’s important that children have an opportunity to learn English as early as possible. For those children for whom English is a second language this early start helps with learning other subjects too.
Following those initial steps, usually taken at home with the support of their parents, when they go on to attend primary and then secondary school they are able to learn more about how words and sentences are constructed, so they can develop ways to express themselves.
Furthermore, when students are considering further education at a university, or a college or thinking of securing a place on an apprenticeship scheme, proof of ability to use at least a basic level of English is essential.
To be successful at studying English pupils need a good understanding of the structure of words, the parts of language and also how to write about fiction and non-fiction subjects.
As skills develop students will need to:
- Develop their skills in understanding, analysing and interpreting a selection of different texts
- Develop their ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when writing
- Become proficient in using vocabulary, spelling and punctuation
- Know how to write in a personal style, whilst staying aware of the audience being addressed.
That’s a very wide range of skills to be learnt, and many of those skills can begin from primary school age.
Recommended reading lists
The GCSE English language syllabus offered by AQA Edexcel and OCR each includes specific books that form key parts of the course.
Depending upon the exam board chosen by a school the books would be taken from four distinct groups:
- 19th Century novels and prose
- Shakespeare
- Modern drama texts
- Modern novels
Students will need to understand the author’s ideas behind their writing, along with various facets of the people in the novels, or plays.
